SmartCards
A smart card is a plastic card with an integrated circuit (IC)
which could be a microprocessor or a memory chip. In some cases, highly secure physical
connections between the card and external systems maybe required – such as computer
logical access or banking – in such cases contact smart cards are most appropriate
(Contact IC).
In environments where convenience or faster connections are
required, smart cards can also be designed with contactless technology to interface
with the host system. This contactless
technology is very secure and encrypted. Common industry contactless brand include MIFARE®, DESFire® EV1 and DESFire® EV2.
As with a PC, a smart card without application is useless. Today, there are hundreds of applications designed
for contact and contactless card technologies.
In addition, smart card encoders and readers are available from many
suppliers.
IDP is happy to assist integrating the correct combination
of cards, encoders, and applications for your environment.
